4-Day Dubrovnik City Guide: Anchor Croatia’s Gems

January 6, 2025

Dubrovnik stands apart from the rest of Croatia with its perfectly preserved medieval walls, dramatic coastal cliffs, and an Old Town that feels like stepping into another century. Unlike other parts of the country, Dubrovnik offers a seamless blend of historic charm and refined luxury. Here, you can expect gourmet dining experiences that rival Europe’s culinary capitals, beaches that feel like hidden paradises, and views that linger in your mind long after you’ve left. While you could easily spend a week here, four days is just enough to experience its highlights without feeling rushed.

Day 1: Arrival and city walls

Morning

Start your Dubrovnik journey at Buža Bar. This stunning café, perched on a cliff outside the city walls, offers breathtaking views of Lokrum Island and the Adriatic. Its unique entrance—a small door in the Old Town’s walls—makes it a true hidden gem.

Late Morning

Next, dive into Dubrovnik’s rich history with a walk along the City Walls. These medieval fortifications encircle the Old Town and provide unparalleled views of the terracotta rooftops and the shimmering sea below. Don’t miss the Minceta Tower, an iconic spot for photos. We prefer to wander the walls at our own pace for the chance to stop and drink in the views, take photos, and avoid tiring ourselves out from all the stairs.

Lunch

For lunch, head to Proto Restaurant, a long-standing Dubrovnik institution specialising in seafood. Their lobster pasta and fresh oysters are a must-try, paired with a glass of Pošip from Korčula.

Afternoon

Stroll through the Rector’s Palace and Sponza Palace to immerse yourself in Dubrovnik’s Renaissance and Gothic architecture. Cool off with a scoop from Peppino’s Artisan Gelato, a local favourite.

Dinner

As the sun sets, treat yourself to a fine dining experience at 360°, a Michelin-starred restaurant situated on the city walls. It’s world-famous for a reason. Opt for their tasting menu, which beautifully blends Croatian tradition with contemporary gastronomy.

Day 2: Beaches and views

Morning

Spend your morning basking in the sun at Banje Beach, located just a short walk from the Old Town. With its crystal-clear waters and stunning backdrop of the city walls, this is the perfect place to unwind. This is a popular tourist destination so expect it to be busy in high season, but we think the views are worth it.

lunch

Enjoy a laid-back lunch at Beach Bar Dodo on nearby Lokrum Island. This lush, car-free island is just a 15-minute ferry ride from Dubrovnik and offers secluded beaches and shaded trails. You have to make the trip over once while visiting Dubrovnik to get the full experience.

Afternoon

Take a cable car ride to Mount Srđ for panoramic views of Dubrovnik and the Elaphiti Islands. While at the summit, visit the Homeland War Museum for insights into Croatia’s recent history. Make sure to stay for sunset because the views are absolutely indescribable from up here.

Dinner

Return to the Old Town for dinner at Azur, a hidden gem blending Dalmatian ingredients with Asian-inspired flavours. Their octopus tacos and pork belly bao buns are unmissable.

Day 3: island escapade

Morning

We highly recommend a private boat tour to the Elaphiti Islands. These tranquil islands—Koločep, Lopud, and Šipan—are perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and exploring hidden coves. Make sure to visit the sandy beach of Šunj on Lopud. Opt for a private tour over a group tour to avoid the crowds of tourists, explore at your own pace and visit the spots you really want to see without relying on the group itinerary. You can even pack your own snacks and drinks for the trip.

Lunch

Dock at Šipan and enjoy lunch at Konoba Kod Marka, a family-run restaurant known for its fresh seafood and relaxed atmosphere. Their grilled fish, caught that morning, is a standout.

Afternoon

After your island adventure, return to Dubrovnik for some downtime. If you’re in the mood to be pampered, treat yourself to a spa session at Villa Dubrovnik, one of the city’s most luxurious hotels.

Dinner

End the day with dinner at Pjerin, the hotel’s signature restaurant. Overlooking the Adriatic, Pjerin offers an exquisite menu of locally inspired dishes, such as lamb peka.

Day 5: Old town & farewell

Morning

We recommend a guided walking tour for at least part of your exploration of the old town. This city is packed with so much ancient history, its basically an open air museum, so you will surely wander past the fascinating stories without even knowing it. A local guide will ensure you don’t miss the most important bits. You’ll experience gems like Franciscan Monastery, Onofrio’s Fountain, and Pile Gate are just a few of the monuments that deserve attention. Conclude the morning at the Gundulić Square Market, where you can browse stalls filled with local honey, lavender, and rakija—perfect souvenirs to bring home.

Lunch

Head to Lady Pi-Pi, a charming outdoor eatery known for its hearty Croatian meals and unbeatable views of the city. Their mixed grill platter is a crowd-pleaser.

Afternoon

Spend your final afternoon strolling along Dubrovnik’s Lapad Peninsula. This picturesque area is close to the city and offers scenic walking paths, small coves for swimming, and charming cafés where you can relax by the sea. It’s a favourite spot among locals, providing a peaceful escape from the busier Old Town while still showcasing the city’s natural beauty.

Dinner

For your farewell dinner, opt for Taj Mahal, a cosy and affordable spot serving hearty Bosnian cuisine right in the heart of Dubrovnik. Known for its warm hospitality and flavourful dishes, it’s a favourite among locals and visitors alike. Try their signature čevapi or the stuffed peppers for a comforting end to your Dubrovnik adventure.
