4-Day Split Itinerary: The Perfect City Escape

February 4, 2025

Split is a city that balances old and new in a way few places can. With the shimmering Adriatic on one side and rugged mountains on the other, it’s a place where ancient Roman walls house buzzing wine bars, and where you can swim in the sea before lunch and hike through pine forests before dinner. Four days is the sweet spot to experience the best of Split without rushing. Here’s how to make the most of it.

Day 1: Heart of the City

Start your day in Diocletian’s Palace, the 1,700-year-old Roman complex that still forms the city’s core. It’s not a museum—it’s a living, breathing part of Split, with cafés tucked into ancient walls and boutique shops hidden down stone alleyways. Wander the Peristyle Square early to soak in the history before the crowds arrive, then climb the Bell Tower of St. Domnius for panoramic views of the city, sea and surrounding islands. Don’t miss Diocletian’s apartments, Jupiter’s Temple, and the city gates (You may consider a guidebook or a local tour guide to truly understand the depth of the history you are exploring).

In the afternoon, head to Marjan Park. Rent a bike (city bike rentals are available) or hike through the forested park, stopping at scenic viewpoints overlooking the islands. Along the way, visit some of Marjan’s historic churches, like St. Nicholas Church, a tiny medieval chapel, or St. Jerome Church, tucked into the cliffs near an old hermitage. Stop at Teraca Vidilica for a refreshment with views of the city on your way through. If you’re up for it, head to the highest point and climb up the 19-metre tall observation tower at sunset for the most stunning 360-degree views.

For dinner, book a spot at Konoba Nevera, known for the freshest seafood and an excellent wine list. Try the tuna steak or the seafood pasta Buzara. End the night at Monika’s Wine Bar, a charming spot with a well-curated selection of Croatian wines.

Day 2: island hopping

No trip to Split is complete without getting on the water. One day should be spent on a sailing trip around the islands. Instead of spending days taking ferries and hauling luggage from island to island, a day trip lets you experience some of the most beautiful bays, swim stops, and waterfront restaurants in one unforgettable day. We recommend a route that takes you to the top destinations on Islands Brač and Šolta for a truly magical experience.

Anchor Croatia offers private day-sails on a sailboat that accommodates up to 9 people. We provide drinks, swim toys, wifi, speaker, ice maker, and a full kitchen on board so you can spend the day experiencing the best of the islands. You’re welcome to bring your own food and will also have the opportunity to dock at a local restaurant for an incredible waterfront meal. Contact us for more details

After your island hopping adventure, your skipper will drop you off somewhere along the West Coast of the city. Here is a promenade lined with gorgeous yachts on one side, and waterfront cafes and restaurants on the other. You also have a view of the old town of Split from across the bay from here. Hop off the boat and grab pizza at Basta Gourmet Bar while you people (and yacht) watch as the sun sets over the city.

Day 3: taste of dalmatia

On your third day, wake up early to experience the Green Market like a local. Wander the stalls, pick out fresh flowers or seasonal fruits and vegetables. You might want to grab a snack suitable for a picnic in the park while you’re here (more on that later). Don’t miss the fresh figs if you visit August to September, and if you spot an old lady selling homemade Soparnik (thin layers of dough baked with swiss chard, garlic and olive oil, a regional specialty) you absolutely must buy a slice.

While it’s still early, head to the breakfast hot spot of the city before the brunch crowds arrive. Čiri Biri Bela is a restaurant known for its charming garden setting, fresh ingredients, and creative menu featuring everything from classic eggs Benedict to shakshuka and homemade bread. Since they don’t take reservations, arriving early ensures a relaxed start to the day with a great coffee and a hearty breakfast before exploring more of the city.

While the sun is at its highest and the heat is at its peak, this is an excellent time to explore the basements of Diocletian’s Palace. Enter through the southern Bronze Gate along the Riva, where a ticket (approximately €7 per person) grants access to this underground labyrinth. Originally used as a foundation for the Emperor’s living quarters above, these chambers now house a variety of historical artifacts, including ancient stonework, fragments of Roman columns, and remnants of medieval structures. The well-preserved halls offer a fascinating glimpse into Split’s layered history, with exhibits that help visitors understand how the palace evolved over centuries.

In the afternoon, take a picnic to Sustipan Park, a peaceful retreat with stunning sea views. The grassy area provides the perfect spot to lay out and relax, with views of the Adriatic on one side and the city skyline on the other. A gentle sea breeze and the shade of pine trees make it an ideal escape from the summer heat. The park also features an adorable gazebo and ancient church, which make it all the more charming. Bring along your fresh market figs, stretch out in the grass, and enjoy a slow afternoon with a book in hand.

The park overlooks Jadran Beach Bar, a local favourite. After your picnic, head down to Jadran for an afternoon cocktail as the sun sets over the water. This is a gem where you can swim, relax, and watch local kids play football at the nearby concrete seaside field with a stunning view. The spot is even known to be frequented by some of Croatia’s most famous football stars.

For dinner, reserve a table at Mokosh Restaurant. This restaurant is just outside of the historic city core (but still within easy walking distance) and is set in a beautiful courtyard with a fountain and outdoor bar. The menu puts an elevated twist on traditional Dalmatian dishes. It’s a foodie and design lover’s heaven.

If you’re up for a night cap, try a cocktail from the curated menu at Picasso, a colourful restaurant next to the Peristyle. The staff are friendly and interiors are beautiful. We recommend sitting at the bar.

Day 4: day trip

Start your day with a coffee and light breakfast at Stow Coffee Roasters, some of the best speciality coffee in the city. Set in the heart of the city on a large shady patio, this spot will be filled with visitors and locals alike.

Then, take a half-day trip just outside of the city to Klis Fortress. There are many ways to reach this attraction, including uber, private transfer, or even bus. You’ll be treated to sweeping views over the entire city and a lesson in the ancient history of Dalmatia and the fortresses’ key role in defending it. For Game of Throne lovers, you’ll recognize this location from scenes out of season 4 as the city of Meereen.

Once you’re back in Split, head out for a heart lunch/early dinner at Buffet Fife, a traditional Croatian restaurant serving up local specialties along Matejuška Pier. We recommend trying a traditional dish like Pašticada (braised beef slow cooked in a sweet and sour plum sauce and served over gnocchi).

After your meal, go next door to grab a drink at the “little beer shop” and sit on Matejuška pier to enjoy the sunset. On busier nights, the entire pier comes alive with tourists and locals who come here to mingle, socialize and sometimes even play music. It’s a great spot to meet people or simply soak up the energy of the city.

Assuming you don’t have an early flight the next day, this is the perfect opportunity to experience Split’s lively nightlife. Whether you’re in the mood for cocktails and a laid-back atmosphere at Fabrique Pub, a high-energy dance floor at X Club, or a full nightclub experience at Central the Club, there’s something for everyone. Head out, enjoy the music, and raise a glass to an unforgettable few days in one of the most captivating and culturally rich cities on the Adriatic.

Split is a city that lingers with you. The ancient city walls, clean sea, towering mountains and sprawling nature park all within this small urban centre make this place incredibly unique.
