4-Day Dubrovnik City Guide: Anchor Croatia’s Favourites

January 6, 2025

Dubrovnik stands apart from the rest of Croatia with its perfectly preserved medieval walls, dramatic coastal cliffs, and an Old Town that feels like stepping into another century. Unlike other parts of the country, Dubrovnik offers a seamless blend of historic charm and refined luxury. Here, you can expect gourmet dining experiences that rival Europe’s culinary capitals, nearby islands that feel like hidden paradises, and views that linger in your mind long after you’ve left. While you could easily spend a week here, four days is just enough to experience its highlights without feeling rushed.

Day 1: Arrival and city walls

Morning

Kick off your Dubrovnik adventure on a high note by walking the city walls first thing in the morning. These medieval fortifications encircle the Old Town and provide unparalleled views of the terracotta rooftops and the shimmering sea below. In summer, the walls fill up by 9:00 AM, and the sun turns them into a sizzling stone griddle. By midday you’ll fry like eggs. Arrive early to enjoy the views in peace, with cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and don’t forget sun protection—there’s little shade up there. Once you’ve checked off this must-see, you’ll have the rest of the day to explore at a relaxed pace.

Late Morning

Next, make your way to Buža Bar for another unforgettable view. This cliffside café, perched on the outside of the city walls, offers breathtaking panoramas of Lokrum Island and the Adriatic. Its entrance—a small, unassuming door in the Old Town’s walls—adds to its charm. Bring a swimsuit if you fancy a dip, as you can swim straight off the rocks below. Keep in mind that Buža is only open during the summer months. If you walk the city walls first, you’ll spot it from above as you approach the view of Lokrum Island.

Lunch

For lunch, head to Proto Restaurant, a long-standing Dubrovnik institution specialising in seafood. Their lobster pasta and fresh oysters are a must-try, paired with a glass of Pošip from Korčula.

Afternoon

Stroll through the Rector’s Palace and Sponza Palace to immerse yourself in Dubrovnik’s Renaissance and Gothic architecture. Cool off with a scoop from Peppino’s Artisan Gelato, a local favourite.

Dinner

As the sun sets, treat yourself to a fine dining experience at 360°, a Michelin-starred restaurant situated on the city walls. It’s world-famous for a reason. Opt for their tasting menu, which beautifully blends Croatian tradition with contemporary gastronomy.

Day 2: Beaches and Hidden gems

Morning

The small fishing village of Cavtat, just 15 kilometres south of Dubrovnik, is well worth a visit, and we always recommend our guests take the time to experience its quiet charm. This little gem offers a relaxed escape from the city, with plenty of cafés, bars, restaurants, and small shops to explore. Getting there is easy, with options including Uber, private transfers, water taxis, or ferries. You can find transportation options here or contact Anchor Croatia to arrange everything for you.

afternoon

Once in Cavtat, our favourite excursion awaits. For the ultimate retreat, set sail to St. Pietro Dubrovnik, a hidden oasis on Supetar Island. This exclusive paradise offers a choice of experiences: enjoy a leisurely lunch at the restaurant, sip cocktails at the lounge bar, or unwind in a private beachfront cabana. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, offering a secluded escape from the bustle of the mainland. Best of all, St. Pietro provides its own private charter boat, making the this quiet luxury completely accessible and the journey seamless. We recommend taking the charter from Cavtat, spending a few hours soaking up the island vibes, and then returning to Dubrovnik’s Old Town by boat. Be sure to call ahead for a reservation, as this sought-after spot books up quickly.

For charter boat details and reservations, visit St. Pietro’s official site.

Evening

Once you’ve returned to the Old Town, take a cable car ride to Mount Srđ for panoramic views of Dubrovnik and the Elaphiti Islands. While at the summit, visit the Homeland War Museum for insights into Croatia’s recent history. Make sure to stay for sunset because the views are absolutely indescribable from up here.

Dinner

Return to the Old Town for dinner at Azur, a hidden gem blending Dalmatian ingredients with Asian-inspired flavours. Their octopus tacos and pork belly bao buns are unmissable.

For after dinner drinks, head to M’arden Wine Bar, a little gem tucked away within a hidden courtyard inside the city walls. Designed for true wine lovers, this intimate spot offers a break from the city’s lively energy. The sommeliers are incredibly knowledgeable, guiding you through expertly curated selections while sharing the stories behind each bottle. With a five-star rating across the board, M’arden has built a reputation for exceptional service and an unforgettable tasting experience. Open daily from 5:00–11:00 PM, reservations are essential, as they keep the atmosphere relaxed and exclusive. Secure your spot here

Day 3: island escapade

Morning

We highly recommend a private boat tour to the Elaphiti Islands. These tranquil islands—Koločep, Lopud, and Šipan—are perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and exploring hidden coves. Make sure to visit the sandy beach of Šunj on Lopud. Opt for a private tour over a group tour to avoid the crowds of tourists, explore at your own pace and visit the spots you really want to see without relying on the group itinerary. You can even pack your own snacks and drinks for the trip.

Lunch

Dock at Šipan and enjoy lunch at Konoba Kod Marka, a family-run restaurant known for its fresh seafood and relaxed atmosphere. Their grilled fish, caught that morning, is a standout.

Afternoon

After your island adventure, return to Dubrovnik for some downtime. If you’re in the mood to be pampered, treat yourself to a spa session at Villa Dubrovnik, one of the city’s most luxurious hotels.

Dinner

End the day with dinner at Pjerin, the hotel’s signature restaurant. Overlooking the Adriatic, Pjerin offers an exquisite menu of locally inspired dishes, such as lamb peka.

Day 5: Old town & farewell

Morning

We recommend a guided walking tour for at least part of your exploration of the old town. This city is packed with so much ancient history, its basically an open air museum, so you will surely wander past the fascinating stories without even knowing it. A local guide will ensure you don’t miss the most important bits. You’ll experience gems like Franciscan Monastery, Onofrio’s Fountain, and Pile Gate are just a few of the monuments that deserve attention. Conclude the morning at the Gundulić Square Market, where you can browse stalls filled with local honey, lavender, and rakija—perfect souvenirs to bring home.

Lunch

Head to Lady Pi-Pi, a charming outdoor eatery known for its hearty Croatian meals and unbeatable views of the city. Their mixed grill platter is a crowd-pleaser.

Afternoon

Spend your final afternoon strolling along Dubrovnik’s Lapad Peninsula. This picturesque area is close to the city and offers scenic walking paths, small coves for swimming, and charming cafés where you can relax by the sea. It’s a favourite spot among locals, providing a peaceful escape from the busier Old Town while still showcasing the city’s natural beauty.

Dinner

For your farewell dinner, opt for Taj Mahal, a Michelin-recommended spot serving hearty Bosnian cuisine in the heart of Dubrovnik. Founded by a Bosnian couple passionate about sharing their heritage, the restaurant stays true to tradition, sourcing meats from their own butcher shop for the highest quality dishes. Try their signature ćevapi or stuffed peppers for a comforting and authentic end to your Dubrovnik adventure.
